Sommelier Position

 

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Responsible for overseeing wine bar and to serve as our wine expert and create a wine list that will pair nicely with our cheese menu. Create new and exciting pairings, promote and grow the wine bar program, and helping in planning promotional events.

Experience 

 

2-3 years experience as a sommelier is preferred. 

Relevant experience in hospitality or a vineyard is required. 

Must have a flexible schedule and the ability to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays based on business demands.

A working knowledge of the practices and procedures of safe food handling and TIPS certification required.

Excellent customer service skills.

Friendly demeanor and positive attitude.

Ability to work in a team. Ability to think critically and efficiently.

Be a skilled communicator with excellent problem solving, observation, and interpersonal skills.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

Recommending wine varieties to our guests.

 

Oversees wine bar inventory, budgets, licenses and resources.

 

Train wait staff on available wines.

 

Collaborates with winemakers to renew our selections and achieve better prices.

 

Manage wine cellar and ensure it’s fully-stocked.

 

Maintains professionalism and is friendly and approachable towards guests and staff, responding proactively to customer complaints.

 

Reports directly to the General Manager. 

 

Store open bottles properly to maintain strong taste. 

 

Tastings to be handled as a professional business transaction.

 

Works with management to understand the budget and inventory record keeping, and ensures bar is profitable.

 

Checks identification and confirms it meets legal drinking age. 

 

Staying updated on current menu choices, specialties and menu deviations. 

 

Performing basic cleaning tasks as needed or directed by supervisors. 

 

Assists with special events as needed. 

 

Greets all guests warmly to develop customer loyalty.

 

Adheres to grooming and appearance standards consistently.

 

Reports safety hazards and all employee accidents to General Manager or Assistant General Manager on duty. 

 

Complete all other duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education: Experience as a Sommelier, Wine Steward/Stewardess or similar role. 2-3 years related experience preferred. Must be TIPS certified.

 

Language: Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, vendors and co-workers.

Excellent and Extensive knowledge of different wines and which regions produce each type.

 

Understands the winemaking process.

Willingness to work during peak hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Hours and Availability 

Typical workweek: 20-25 hours 

*May be more hours during high event seasons.

 

Hours vary depending on business demand.

Benefits and Pay

Employees are considered “full time status" if the employee consistently works over 30 hours per work week. Benefits are offered to all full time employees after 60 days of employment, including medical, dental, vision and a free life insurance policy.

This position starts at $25/hr
